October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

As the vibrant colors of fall emerge, we embrace the opportunity to come together as a community to support and uplift one another. October is a significant month for Shelter from the Storm, as we dedicate our efforts to raising awareness and fostering a safer environment for all.

October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a nationwide effort dedicated to bringing awareness to the pervasive issue of domestic violence and its profound impact on individuals and communities. DVAM is a time for organizations and individuals across the country to unite in promoting healthy relationships and building safe, supportive communities for everyone.

Did You Know?

• 1 in 3 people will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime.

• 1 in 3 teenagers, 1 in 4 women, and 1 in 7 men will face domestic violence at some point in their lives.

Since 1989, when Congress officially declared October as DVAM, countless initiatives and activities have been launched to uplift the voices and experiences of survivors. As members of our community, each of us holds the power to influence change. By educating ourselves about domestic violence and engaging in open discussions, we can alter the trajectory of someone’s life and create a ripple effect of support and understanding.

Ways to Participate in DVAM

EOU Homecoming Parade-October 11th at 4:30pm

Join us at the EOU Homecoming Parade on October 11th at 4:30 PM! Look for the Shelter from the Storm staff proudly wearing purple as a symbol of our commitment to DVAM. It’s a fantastic opportunity to show your support and celebrate community solidarity.

Purple Thursday- October 17th 6:30pm

Show your support by wearing purple on Thursday, October 17th. Let’s flood our community with purple to raise awareness about domestic violence and stand in solidarity with survivors. While wearing your purple, enjoy a fun and family-friendly evening with an outdoor screening of Beetlejuice on the EOU campus near Zabel Hall at 6:30 PM. Popcorn will be provided, and it’s a perfect way to support DVAM while enjoying a classic film under the stars.

Candlelight Vigil- October 24th at 6pm

Join us for a Candlelight Vigil at Riverside Pavilion on October 24th at 6:00 PM. This solemn event is dedicated to lighting candles in memory of those we have lost to domestic violence. It’s a powerful way to honor their lives and raise awareness about the ongoing fight against abuse.

Purple Ribbons Around Town

Look out for purple ribbons adorning light poles downtown on Adams Street and at EOU. These ribbons symbolize our commitment to DVAM and serve as a reminder to support and protect those affected by domestic violence. Take a moment to snap a photo with a ribbon and share your support on social media using #PaintItPurple and #DVAM2024.
